THE BBQ

The BBQ took place at Easter Ogil on Saturday August 16th and raised £884. Luckily the weather stayed dry and although the wind had a bit of a chill in it everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Our 'Burger Kings' David Green and David Brex did a wonderful job. The salads and desserts provided by members of the congregation were superb as always. Thanks to Shelagh and Colin for prividing the venue and to all those who supported, gave the very generous raffle prizes, set-up, cleared-up, and helped with the numerous tasks involved in putting on another successful St. John's event.

FORFAR GALA WEEK

Our Gala Week was opened on Monday, June 23rd by Mary, Dowager Countess of Strathmore & Kinghorne.

Our objectives were undoubtedly achieved. We took the opportunity during Forfar’s Gala Week to show our church off to many visitors and showcase many aspects of St John’s history and our life as a congregation to-day.
We were featured in The Press & Journal, The Courier, and the Forfar Dispatch.
During the week of activities we raised nearly £922 for church funds.

What a full and interesting week it was, Evensong on Sunday the 22nd, the official opening so kindly and charmingly carried out by Mary, Countess of Strathmore & Kinghorne on the 23rd, Bishop Luscombe’s wonderful talk on the 24th, the excellent FACT ‘Scots Praise’ service on the 25th, brilliant lunch-time music, Sally Atkinson’s great talk after our supper on Saturday, and our almost rain-free Restenneth service on Sunday.

As always in St. John’s the successful outcome was a result of a great team effort and in addition to those who spent hours preparing the exhibition and welcoming, guiding and providing our visitors with refreshments, we are deeply indebted to Bishop Ted and Sally Atkinson for their presentations and to the musicians and singer (Robert Lightband, Graeme Stevenson, Revd. Richard Evans, Ronald Oliver, Alister Allan, Euan Crabb, Sylvia Knox) who provided lovely music on four lunch-times. These good people all gave their time freely and generously.

Thanks to those who made and donated the canapés for Tuesday, the splendid desserts for Saturday (everybody really loved them), those who shifted furniture, served food, dispensed drinks, did the raffle, washed up, organised the audio system,set-up, etc, etc.

REPORTS ON PREVIOUS EVENTS DURING THE PAST FEW MONTHS

The Annual Trip To Pitlochry Festival Theatre(Thursday, June 19th)

Yet again we were able to have our picnic before the show. (Linda says that the picnic has only been 'rained off' once in over 20 years!) The play, 'Wild Honey' an adaptation by Michael Frayne of Checkovs first play was excellently performed by a very skillful cast. The sets, as most have come th expect at the 'Festival' were superb

Nora Craigs Garden Opening

A beautiful summers day in a beautiful garden was the consensus of the many people who attended Nora's annual Garden Opening on Saturday, May 31st. She raised a magnificent £1000 for St.John's.

Nora Craigs Plant Sale and the annual Spring Coffee Morning

This event on May 10th raised £782 for church funds, well done Nora and all those who looked after the stalls, served the coffee, provided the produce and goods to sell, and did the setting-up and clearing up. Our thanks also to those who supported the event.

The Annual Snowdrop Walk

Our thanks to Col. & Mrs Lloyd-Jones for their kind hospitality on Feb 17th. It was a perfect day for the walk which was attended by a very good number of people, who after enjoying the lovely countryside, enjoyed a really super spread of cakes, scones, and biscuits with lovely 'cuppa' in the Lloyd-Jones's dining room. £144 was donated to St.John's funds.

Forfar Academy Annual Carol Service

On Dec 19th a packed St. John's was the venue for the Forfar Academy Annual Carol Sevice. Congratulations to the students and their teachers for presenting a really lovely evening

ANNUAL DECEMBER COFFEE MORNING

DEC 8th

The coffee morning was well attended and raised £715. Well done all those who supported, provided lots of super produce, provided other items for sale and assisted with the setting up, clearing up, preparing and serving the coffee & excellent mince pies etc.

‘Supper With Guest Speaker’

November 27th: We had great pleasure in listening to a wonderful talk by the Lord Lieutenant of Angus, Georgiana Osborne of Balmadies, The well attended event raised £984.18

Georgiana Osborne succeeded Lord Airlie as Lord-Lieutenant of Angus in May 2001, the first lady Lord-Lieutenant to be appointed in Angus, and the 3rd in Scotland

She was born and brought up in New Zealand and came to live in the UK when she married her husband James in 1968. She met James in NZ when, as an officer in The Black Watch, he was serving as an ADC to the Governor General, Brigadier Sir Bernard Fergusson, later Lord Ballantrae. James was brought up at Balmadies, by Forfar, and James and Georgie returned to live in Angus in 1974, moving to Balmadies in 1982.
They have 4 grown–up children, 3 of whom are married, and 6 grandchildren. The Osborne family have long connection with St.John's. Mrs June Osborne who served on the Vestry is a regular worshipper and her late husband Major Gerald Osborne, MC, TD, a veteran of the 2nd World War was a lesson reader from 1950 until 1995. (There is a commemorative plaque to Maj. Osborne by the lectern)

THE ANNUAL ORGAN RECITAL OCT 13th

Neil Smeaton's excellent performance was extremely well recieved and enjoyed by a good number of St.John's people and friends. His well balanced programme included work by Guilmant (1837-1911), Saint-Saens (1835-1921), Whitlock (1903-1946), Bairstow ((1847-1946), Gigout (1844-1925), Lemare(1865-1984), Stratham (1889-1973), Vierne (1870-1937).

We are, indeed, very fortunate to have such a talented young musician as our regular organist at St.John's.

Thanks, Neil for a splendid and most enjoyable evening's entertainment.

CANTIONES SACRAE CONCERT, SEPTEMBER 30th

A truly wonderful experience, beautiful sacred music by Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, their contempories & latter day composers, performed unaccompanied by the four excellent singers, Linda Dallas, Lisa Rose, Jonathan Matheson-Dear & Graeme Adamson, who obviously put heart and soul into their performance. The group appear again on December 23rd in St.Salvador's Church, Dundee. If you missed them at St. John's be sure to see them on the 23rd.

THE PITLOCHRY THEATRE TRIP Thursday, June 28th 2007

Linda's 20th Pitlochry trip, despite one or two unforseen hitches, was yet again a great success. Our coach after leaving forfar developed engine problems and had to be replaced. This was done with remarkable speed! We still arrived at the Festival Theatre with sufficient time (just) to have our picnics. The play that we were booked to see, The Magistrate was replaced with a brilliant performance of Snake in the Grass. Unfortunately the leading lady of The Magistrate had earlier in the day sustained injuries in an accicident. We all hope that she is well on the road to recovery. It was a great night out. Thanks Linda.

SISTER FAY'S TALK Tuesday 26th June 2007

Sister Fay who has been a member of her order, The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, for 60 years paid her second visit to St.John's and spoke to a 'full house' This remakable octogenarian, who has dedicated her life to helping others has a wonderful ability to tell her stories about her work in the most deprived and forsaken areas of the world in a thought provoking, but frequently amusing way. Sister Fay is determined to come back next year and give us her No 3 talk. The evening was concluded with a a short appreciation of Sister Fay by Col. David Lloyd-Jones, another remarkable octogenarian who had welcomed her earlier in the evening on behalf of St. John's. This was followed by a much enjoyed buffet and a spot of wine! Many thanks to all who supported, helped with the setting up, clearing up, provided food, (which included some wonderful deserts), served the food and drink and all of the other tasks involved in presenting this lovely event which raised £556. This will be shared between the St. John's Fabric Fund and the Order of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

THE RENFROE CONCERT Friday, June 15th

The church was full for this excellent evenings' entertainment, which was presented jointly by St. John's and St. Mary's Kirriemuir. Sadly, due to illness, Lorraine Renfroe was unable to be with Douglas and the other members of the company on their current tour of Scotland. We all wish her a speedy recovery and she will, no doubt be in the prayers of all who have had the great pleasure of meeting her on previous visits to the area. The event raised £1377 to be shared between the two churches. Many thaks to all who supported and to those from both churches who assisted with the many tasks befor, during and after the event.
