Music In St John’s

The Organ

The three manual Conacher organ dates from 1889. It is valued by the congregation for its important place in church services and also by a range of local professional and amateur organists for recitals, or simply for practice and pleasure. The organist and choirmaster Neil Smeaton was appointed at the age of 15 in 1998. He is much in demand as a fine recitalist and accompanist.

Other music

The excellent acoustic of the church lends itself to all kinds of musical performance.

Since about 1998 this potential has been deliberately exploited. In addition to regular organ recitals St John’s has become well known for performances of all kinds. These have involved professional and amateur musicians, soloists, choirs and school ensembles. St John’s seeks out young musicians to offer them a platform at the start of their careers. The Rector and Vestry welcome these musical activities as part of our open-door policy and as a contribution to the cultural life of Forfar and the surrounding district.
