St John's congregation worships on Sundays (11am). These services are put out online via YouTube. The services can be accessed through St John's YouTube channel.  All are very welcome. All services are a Sung Eucharist except for the third Sunday of the month which is Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament (the words are to be found here).

There is also a shortened Said Eucharist every Wednesday at 10.15am.

Drop in for Soul Time: An on-line prayer group (for 10 minutes) is available every Wednesday at 5pm via St John's YouTube channel (see above). It comprises reading of scripture, reflection, personal meditation and response in prayer.

The Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC) broadcasts a service at 11am every Sunday via its website, social media channels and YouTube channel. There is also a dedicated Children's Chapel service every Sunday. The web page for both broadcasts is located at www.scotland.anglican.org/broadcast-sunday-worship .

Music In St John’s

The Organ

The three manual Conacher organ dates from 1889. It is valued by the congregation for its important place in church services and also by a range of local professional and amateur organists for recitals, or simply for practice and pleasure. The organist and choirmaster Neil Smeaton was appointed at the age of 15 in 1998. He is much in demand as a fine recitalist and accompanist.

Other music

The excellent acoustic of the church lends itself to all kinds of musical performance.

Since about 1998 this potential has been deliberately exploited. In addition to regular organ recitals St John’s has become well known for performances of all kinds. These have involved professional and amateur musicians, soloists, choirs and school ensembles. St John’s seeks out young musicians to offer them a platform at the start of their careers. The Rector and Vestry welcome these musical activities as part of our open-door policy and as a contribution to the cultural life of Forfar and the surrounding district.

St Margaret’s, Lunanhead

St John's worked together with Angus Creative Minds and Angus Health & Social Care Partnership to create a video remembering people who have died. Those contributing expressed their thoughts in word and voice and local artists interpreted those in artwork which was put together into a film. This can be viewed here . A group then met by video-conference to view the film and discuss their reactions. The event was a great success and one we intend to repeat in 2021.
